Welcome to the June 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
I just returned from nearly 3 weeks in Europe on an extended business trip. It was a long trip away from family but each stop was prosperous and very much worth the effort. One of my stops was in Nantes, France where Ashtech is headquartered. Ashtech is a premier GNSS technology manufacturer with a rich, long history. François Erceau, General Manager and VP, granted us an exclusive interview. Mr. Erceau discussed his perspective of the GNSS industry, emerging trends, and Ashtech’s future direction. The video is featured below in our Video of the Week.
I also was fortunate enough to get a chance to visit Dredging International in Antwerp, Belgium. My good friend Peter De Moor and his colleagues provide me a better understanding of the art of dredging and why 3D machine control and positioning plays a big role in newfound levels of accuracy and efficiency. I share this information in my article submission below, 3D Machine Control On the Water.
In this issue, we have a total of 7 new articles from our columnists and contributors. First, Jürgen Reinke returns as guest author with an announcement of 3D machine control adoption for Germany’s Jade-Weser Port. Paul Hahn discusses affordable alternatives to test drive new 3D machine control. Marco Cecala of Takeoff Professionals discusses the advantages for the market when companies consolidate. Jay Jones peeks into the future and discusses his perception of what's next for land surveyors and machine control. Nigel Adams submits part 2 of his article on site connectivity and data flow, and industry veteran Ron Ciccarone presents Son of a TIN.
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. As always, please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!
Best regards,
Randy Noland

3D Machine Control On the Water
Water ways and coast lines are ever changing; riverbeds, bays and ports accumulate sand, soil and debris and they must be dug out, i.e. dredged, to keep the shipping lanes open for commerce, etc. My mission was to learn how 3D machine control is used in the world of dredging.

Check out our video of the week, hand-picked by our editorial team:
Francois Erceau –
Mr. Erceau discusses Ashtech's new branding and company direction as well as his perspective on the GNSS Industry and related positioning markets.

Paul HahnTest Drive Machine Control by Paul Hahn: Look before you leap alternatives - I think with the number of players in the game, it is obvious that machine control is here to stay. So it is a question of when, not if, machine control systems will be on most machines. It is well documented that both large heavy and highway and small site preparation contractors have realized ...

Marco CecalaThe Advantages of Companies Consolidation by Marco Cecala: - I’m sure you have been noticing the recent announcements regarding larger companies in our industry acquiring smaller ones. Often times this is seen as the strong taking the weaker company and gutting it to their benefit. However, this is not the case. I don’t want to get mired in the specifics of Company "A" buying …

Ron CiccaroneSon of a TIN! by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – As we continue the study of building good 3D models, the edge or external limit of the TIN is very important to analyze for correctness. I am going to be using a term that needs definition for clarity. The word is Link. This is the term that I use for one side of a triangle in a TIN. The link connects two 3D points. Other software programs or ...
