Noland
Welcome to the February 2011 edition of our eNewsletter. Spring is just a couple of months away and I do hope you're seeing activity that indicates a healthy construction season. We're ramping up for ConExpo next month in Las Vegas and eager to launch our new Machine Control Magazine at the show. You can see a demo of the new digital magazine here. More on that in the next newsletter, but if you are interested in advertising please contact us.
In this issue we have 7 new articles from our exclusive MCo authors. Paul Hahn discusses the importance of optical total stations in construction, and their evolution over the years. Marco Cecala continues with part 2 of his article, "GPS is Underused." Marco's article has two embedded instructional videos, and he'll be doing more multimedia training videos in our new digital magazine.
Chad Cooper continues to share his experience in data prep with "Building a Simple Site - 20/20 Hindsight," and Nigel Adams discuss the perfect axial sensor. Ron Ciccarone, returning from new software training, provides valuable information for building data for parking lots, and Joe Sass brings us his second article submission, "Internet RTK - A Changing Model." Please welcome guest author Rebecca Muhlenkort, who has the Spotlight with her article, "3D Machine Control and Snow Distribution."
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. MachineControlOnline.com is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
As always, I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. Please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!
Best regards,
Randy Noland

From the Machine Control Online Authors... New Articles for February, 2011:
Randy Noland PAVING and 3D Machine Control (Part 2) by Randy Noland: – Last month I summarized a brief history for paving and how large and important the industry has become. The focus of this article is to discuss the application of 3D machine control to concrete paving, asphalt paving and milling. First lets discuss some differences between concrete and asphalt paving. The differences ...
Paul Hahn Optical Total Stations in Construction by Paul Hahn: – Most of the buzz the last ten years has been about RTK GPS (or GNSS)-based surveying and machine control. This is for a good reason. GNSS based systems can increase productivity dramatically. They need no line of sight to make measurements and greatly increase operational range when compared to optical total stations ...
Marco Cecala GPS is Underused (Part 2) by Marco Cecala: – When a new user of GPS gets training, it is usually on an active job site. The dealer will go to the site and help the contractor place the base station and localize the job. With the site all set up, the contractor goes to work. They are now trained in the use of the rover and machines they will use on the project. Every day, the user turns on …
=Chad Cooper Building a Simple Site - 20/20 Hindsight by Chad Cooper: – I have a long standing tradition that every January I go back and clean out anything which is not mission critical from more than a year or two ago. This used to mean a whole mess of paper plans for projects which had been built for over a year or so, but with everything being scanned now, this is not as much of an ...
=Nigel Adams My Sensor by Nigel Adams: – I had intended to produce an update to my previous Machine Control Online article - Machine Guidance Sensors (April and May 2009). Since it was first published, the field of machine control tilt/angle sensing has seen some changes and improvements, and more recent technological advances are certainly worth mentioning, as are some of ...
Ron Ciccarone Modeling a Parking Lot by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – It is interesting that a lot of jobs that I have been processing lately, have had been parking lots. In the next issue or so I will review what I believe are some of the important items to developing a model for a parking lot. This is sort of a continuation of one of my articles titled, Starting the Model, Maybe. The first thing is what data is ...
Joe Sass Internet RTK - A Changing Model by Joe Sass: – Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning has become one of the most common uses of the Global Positioning System (GPS). RTK allows high precision, real-time, location based services over a large geographic area efficiently and affordably. As more of these Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become available, the delivery ...
