Marco, Randy, & Marc
Welcome to the mid-November 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
Already this month, two user conferences—Trimble Dimensions in Las Vegas and Carlson Software's User Conference in Louisville—have concluded. I hope you were able to attend one of these conferences and would welcome your comments.
Personally, I find that I always learn from these events, not only from the offerings of the host company but by gathering with other industry professionals. Discussions always revolve around the current state of affairs and how we can all bring stronger system solutions to our own challenges. Paul Hahn attended Trimble Dimensions and Marco Cecala presented two classes at Carlson's event. Please see our MCo blog for their perspective. Pictured is Marco on the left and your editor.
This issue contains 6 new articles from our team of industry veterans: I write about network corrections for 3D machine control; Paul Hahn discusses how machine control has become a disruptive technology; Marco offers tips on how to troubleshoot a surface; and Jay Jones discusses site supervisor systems and the application-centric value to both the surveyor and the grading contractor. We find Nigel Adams mining for gold in landfills, and Ron Ciccarone draws from recent experience and discusses starting a digital terrain model from CAD.
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
As always, I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. Please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!
Best regards,
Randy Noland

Chilean Miner #33 Honored
As part of the celebration for 25 years of service, Trimble's dealer in Chile, Geocom, honored the 33 Chilean miners rescued from the San Jose Mine back on October 13th. On hand was #33, Mr. Luis Urzua, mine shift foreman who is a licensed land surveyor. Carlos Escudero of Geocom, presented Mr. Urzua with a new Nikon Nivo 5C Total Station. Mr. Urzua was the head of the group of miners that were trapped for 70 days and he was the one who organized the 33 men during ...

From the Machine Control Online Authors... New Articles for November, 2010:

Randy Noland Network Corrections for 3D Machine Control by Randy Noland: – Network corrections for RTK positioning have been around for several years. I remember visiting Dr. Herbert Landau near Munich, Germany back in 1999 when I was working with Geotronics, AB. Dr. Landau was one of the first innovators if not the first, at least for which I was aware. The purpose of my trip in 1999 ...

Paul HahnMachine Control - A Disruptive Technology by Paul Hahn: – "Disruptive technology:" A disruptive innovation is an innovation that disrupts an existing market. The term is used in business and technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically by lowering price, operating costs or designing for ...

Marco CecalaHow to Troubleshoot a Surface by Marco Cecala: – In previous articles, we reviewed the question of accuracy. Taking a look at the article again, you can see that everything is connected. If you think the parking stalls on the west end should not be as steep, you may need to make slope changes further to the east to keep things smooth. The best way to approach the process of …

Jay Jones Machine Control Site Supervisor Systems by Jay Jones, LS: – If you have worked on a construction project lately, or even driven down a road that is under construction, you know about the advent of machine control and how it has become the norm for typical construction projects. As someone who works with machine control on a daily basis as part of my business, I am ...

=Chad Cooper Having a Baby! by Chad Cooper: – We are pleased to report that Chad and his wife are the proud parents of Hannah Renae Cooper, born on the 2nd of this month. Our hope is that all is going well and we hope to see you back soon! (Review his past article - Speed vs Haste by clicking the above link) ...

=Nigel Adams Landfill Treasure - Future Mining Opportunity? by Nigel Adams: – Sitting around in airports is tedious and boring and gets you wondering what you have done in life to deserve such punishment. At times like these I will inevitably start thinking of many things and even on occasions some work related issues which usually include considering how else can I apply the technology that ...

Ron Ciccarone Starting the Model, Maybe by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – Again, I started another job and initial checking revealed that the CAD information was rotated about 30 degrees and the coordinates were not even close (which may be good, if they are too close you may not notice they are wrong). Well to start with the job was in international feet, so allowing for that, I entered the ...
