Welcome to the mid-October 2011 edition of our eNewsletter.
The Law of Innovation. All industries benefit from advancing technology. 3D machine control and positioning impacts production to the extent of rewriting processes and business plans of companies small and large. One of the most technologically advanced components of machine control systems is the GNSS receiver. The laws of innovation have certainly applied to GNSS from its mysterious and archaic beginnings collecting data only at night by the light of a full moon to hours of number crunching post processing unthinkable amounts of data to arrive at a few coordinate positions. Is the technology proposed by Lightsquared simply another disruptive innovation afforded us by the law of innovation not unlike that which occurs in nature? That remains to be seen as the debate continues to occupy headlines and minds alike.
Lightsquared. On Wednesday, October 13, 2011 a press conference was held in Washington D.C. by LightSquared to discuss new filtering technology developed by Javad GNSS and others, and other issues surrounding the controversy with the FCC, Lightsquared and high accuracy GNSS operations. Our sister publication, The American Surveyor and members of the Spatial Media team were present. Please visit LightSquared Watch on amerisurv to keep up with the latest developments on this controversial topic.
In this issue we have 7 articles from our esteemed MCO authors along with contributions from two guest authors, Daniel C Brown and Jeff Winke. Both Dan and Jeff are old friends having appeared before on MachineControlonline.
More to come…
Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information.

3D-MC2 will drastically change the role your dozer plays on a typical site, in some cases eliminating the need for a grader. It will also allow you to make more efficient use of your dozer.

Along with speed increases, 3D-MC2 means fewer passes resulting in much more work done in less time.

Contractor Benefits from a Shift in Business Approach
The expression, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," refers to the idea that any attempt to improve something that already works well is pointless, and may even be detrimental. Many established construction contractors abide by this idiom. Afterall, if they've been successfully making money for 15-, 20-, 30-years or longer, what is there to change? Plenty, according to Delta Construction, Oahu, Hawaii. Established in 1978, the 30-plus-year-old ...

Paul F. Hahn Review of a Must-Read GPS Book by Paul F. Hahn: – Some months back I was given a book on GPS that I had not yet read. The title is "GPS. The First Global Navigation Satellite System". Published in 2007, by Trimble Navigation Limited, it is a surprisingly easy read even for us non-"rocket scientists". Don't let its title confuse you; it is not out-dated and does cover the nuts and bolts of ...
Marco Cecala Intelligent Construction Systems & Technologies Wokshop by Marco Cecala: – During the first week of September, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop of the Intelligent Construction Systems & Technologies (ICST) in St. Louis. The event was hosted by the Federal Highway Administration and was well attended. There were representatives from State and Federal …
=Chad Cooper Nuts & Bolts Workshop - Offer for Help by Chad Cooper: – I currently live within a few miles of an active Air Force Base. Seems like whenever I am outside I see at least one plane up there mocking me. Their to do list for the afternoon: fly simulated combat at 25,000 feet. My to do list for the afternoon: write an online article that is read by two people. Dang - need to ...
Ron Ciccarone On The Road Again - Where Do We Begin? by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – I am beginning a new series of articles about setting up a road as a 3D model. There are different ways to create a 3D model from a road design. The road maybe a major highway, multi-lane, median with inter-changes, ramps, loops, and this is the project. The road could be part of a subdivision where you also ...
Joe Sass An Outdoor Activity - How Much Sky Does GNSS Require? by Joe Sass: – Global Navigation Satellite Systems rely on signals that are being broadcast at relatively low strength from satellites that are orbiting over 11,000 miles above the surface of the planet. Modern GNSS receivers are precisely tuned to listen for these signals and discriminate between the the satellite signals and ...
