RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT PROJECT, CHICAGO HARBOR BREAKWATER REPAIR FY 09, CHICAGO, IL
This opportunity is a Recovery and Reinvestment Act action
Agency: Department of the Army
Office: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Location: US Army Corps of Engineer, Chicago
This Pre-Solicitation Notice is being issued by the United States Army Corps of Engineers - Chicago District to inform interested/potential contractors of the District's imminent re-issue of an Invitation for Bids (IFB) to obtain services for the CHICAGO HARBOR EXTERIOR BREAKWATER REPAIRS, located in CHICAGO, IL.
PROJECT INFORMATION: UNDER THE CONTRACT SET, the Contractor will be responsible for providing all necessary labor, transportation, materials, and equipment to performing repairs to the Chicago Harbor Exterior Breakwater at Sections C and D, approximately 5000 linear feet, containing large voids. The timber piles are deteriorating due to low lake levels; washout of the core stone material has occurred causing failure of portions of the concrete cap. Repairs consist of drilling holes through the existing concrete cap and injecting a specialized grout mixture into the structure to fill the voids. The timber crib on the harbor side will be covered with formwork and the toe stone on the lake side will be covered with a sacrificial layer of stone to minimize seepage of grout into the waters during grout placement. Two grout formulas will be used during the repair: an outer layer of quick-setting lower strength grout will be placed adjacent to the timber piles to form a barrier to placement of a high-strength standard grout to support the concrete cap. The volume of grout placed per linear foot will be monitored to prevent seepage. Lake Michigan will be visually monitored during grout placement. A mock-up and testing will confirm grout placement is effective. This project will include the test section along with a portion of the breakwater repair. Subsequent projects will complete the repair procedure along the 5000 foot length.
